Mandatory e-Prescribing in Maryland

Maryland Senate Bill 0166 signed by Governor Larry Hogan on May 8th, 2020 mandates that all controlled substance prescriptions be prescribed electronically. The bill goes into detail about what must be included in the prescription upon being sent to the pharmacy.  Beginning January 1, 2022 pharmacists and prescribers (other than a veterinarians) will be required to check the patient’s PMP history before dispensing or prescribing opioids, benzodiazepines, barbiturates, or carisoprodol.

Maryland Controlled Substances Prescription Monitoring:

Maryland does not currently offer an integration with their Controlled Substances PMP. Through an integration, prescribers can go directly to the patient's PMP report without having to log in to the PMP and search for the patient
